Facial cosmetic surgery ~ Nelson, New Zealand

Nose enhancement ~ Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is surgery to re-shape or re-model the nose, commonly referred to as a "nose job." This may be performed for cosmetic and/or functional reasons. Nose alterations and re-shaping can have a profound impact on a person's appearance. Rhinoplasty is probably the most complex cosmetic facial plastic surgical procedure as it involves re-shaping of bone, cartilage and soft tissues in a three-dimensional manner so that, not only does the nose look better, but works better as well.

Cosmetic Enhancements ~ Bringing Facial Features Into Balance

Many opt for a rhinoplasty to balance facial features. This can be done by decreasing or increasing the size of the nose, refining the tip or reducing the bridge of the nose, and narrowing or changing the shape of the nostrils. These aesthetic improvements can have a dramatic effect on person’s self-esteem, allowing them to feel more confident in themselves and their appearance.

Correct Nose Defects ~ Caused By Injury or Trauma

Nasal Surgery is often performed to help correct structural defects that are causing breathing problems. This is often the case when someone has had an accident which has caused permanent damage to the nose, through being broken, or experiencing an impact which has altered the shape of their nose to the extent where it is difficult to take in air. This may result in a "boxer's nose" appearance known as a saddle nose where the dorsum becomes flattened and broad. Frequently the nasal airway is affected by the injury and the patient will complain of nasal obstruction.

Am I A Candidate For Rhinoplasty?

Anyone considering rhinoplastic surgery, should be at least in their mid teens — about 15 for girls, and slightly older for boys. At these ages, the nasal bones have matured and the shape of the nose has stabilised.

It's also important that rhinoplasty patients have realistic expectations for their surgery. The surgeon will need to have a clear idea of how your expect your nose to look prior to surgery, so that expectations be aligned with what is surgically possible. We have computer software that allows us to manipulate photographs and aid discussion. This allows the client and surgeon to be confident that they are both aiming for the same result.

Does ACC Cover Nose Re-Shaping Procedures?

If the injury has occurred in New Zealand in or after 1974 and where there is documentative evidence such as an ACC number or a doctor's record, the correction of the post traumatic deformity and/or functional nasal problems is usually covered by the ACC. Surgery can usually be performed within 3 months, after ACC funding is approved. ACC do not cover cosmetic re-shaping.

Undergoing Nasal Plastic Surgery

After the appropriate pre-operative surgical assessments and consultations, surgery is arranged at Manuka Street Trust Hospital, here in Nelson. Surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic and most patients stay overnight. It can be uncomfortable rather than painful and panadol or panadeine is usually sufficient for relief.

Surgery frequently involves straightening of the nasal septum - dividing wall of the nose (septoplasty) followed by reduction or augmentation of the bridge of the nose and finally surgery to the tip of the nose to support or reduce its size.

Post-Op Care ~ After-Effects of Rhinoplasty

Patients are generally able to move some air through their nose, although they should expect to feel stuffy and blocked for 1-2 weeks. Adhesive paper tape is applied to the nose to minimise swelling and a plastic splint is also applied to protect the nose from trauma. Swelling is quite variable, depending on the patient, but is usually at its worst on the third day following surgery. The majority of the swelling settles by two weeks and the remainder more slowly. Bruising can occasionally occur but it usually mild. A saline rinse is used to help with healing.

Patients should only blow their nose lightly in the first week and it may be difficult or uncomfortable to wear glasses or the first month following surgery. In most cases patients are able to return to work in 10 days. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for the first few weeks.

As with any operation, there are risks involved. On rare occasions bleeding from the nose post surgery can be significant and may require attention. Occasionally infection can occur but the risk is reduced by the use of antibiotics. In a small proportion of cases, minor touch-up surgery may be required.

Where To From Here?

A consultation will involve an in-depth discussion about your requirements and, if appropriate, computer imaging can help illustrate the desired shape of the nose.
